History

Institute of Fisheries of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (IF NAAS) was established in 1930 on the basis of the Kyiv research fisheries station. Since that time, its name was changed from "Kyiv Research Institute of pond and lake and river fisheries" (1944), in "Ukrainian Research Institute of Fisheries" (URIF – 1945) and "Ukrainian Scientific-Production Association Pisciculture and Fisheries" (UkrSPO for Pisciculture and Fisheries – 1986), and since 1992 it finally was fixed for the modern name.

Guidance of the Institute

Director of the institute of fisheries Igor Hrytsyniak – Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, professor, Academician of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine. Hrytsyniak I.I. is a member of the Director council on international cooperation of the Network of Scientific Aquaculture Centers in Eastern-Central Europe (NACEE), takes active part in organizing the internships of Ukrainian specialists in foreign scientific institutions and universities. He is the editor-in-chief of scientific journal "Fisheries Science of Ukraine" published in Ukraine since 2007 (е-ISSN 2312-9581, ISSN 2075-1508, DOI: 10.15407/fsu). For his achievements in the development of fisheries sciences, Hrytsyniak I.I. was awarded with the honorary title of “Honored employee of agriculture of Ukraine”, “Honorary worker of fisheries”, “Leader of agribusiness”. He was decorated with the “For Merits” III class order, “St. Volodymyr” order, “Archistratigus Michael” order, “St. George” order, “Christ the Saviour” order, Certificate of Honor of the Central Electoral Commission, “Veteran of Fish Industry” badge, Certificate of Honor of the Cabinet Council of Ukraine and other state distinctions.

Research and development activities

The research and development activities of the Institute follow the scientific and technical programs established by the National Academy of Agrarian Science of Ukraine. In addition, a significant amount of scientific work is conducted every year in response to requests from the State Agency of Fisheries of Ukraine, Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, other ministries and governmental bodies, fisheries related organizations and enterprises as well as according to international agreements and programs.

The main subjects of the scientific activities of the Institute are:

  • rational exploitation of aquatic living resources in inland water bodies;
  • coordination of the work of the breeding farms of Ukraine;
  • conservation of the genetic fund and restoration of the populations of rare and endangered fish species;
  • selective breeding works;
  • biotechnologies in aquaculture;
  • studies of the dynamics of genetic structure formation in multiple-breed groups of fish;
  • ecology of the hydrosystems of inland water bodies;
  • prevention and early diagnostics and treatment of fish diseases;
  • development and improvement of fish feeding technologies, creation and selections of fish feed formulas;
  • consulting on farm aquaculture;
  • development of normative documents regulating fisheries activities in inland water bodies;
  • training of skilled personnel;
  • analysis of the economic efficiency of business activities of aquaculture enterprises; and
  • developing contacts and partnerships for international scientific cooperation.
  • Intellectual property

    Institute of Fisheries also administers patent studies – search, processing, systematization, and analysis of scientific and technical information. The studies are carried out for obtaining basic data for the justified selection of the line of research, application of modern achievements and excluding unjustified duplication of scientific works. If the research and development work is completed successfully, the Institute ensures the acquisition of rights related to such objects of intellectual property as inventions, utility models, commercial specimens, trademarks, copyright objects, etc. Performing the works in different fields of intellectual property, the specialists of our Institute accumulated sufficient potential and practical experience (approx. 100 copyright protection documents were obtained), which allowed them to take the rightful place in the national system of the intellectual property protection in the field of agriculture, in particular, in the field of fisheries science.

    International cooperation

    Scientists of the Institute of Fisheries of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine cooperate with more than thirty scientific institutions in 17 countries of Europe, Asia, and America. The main line is joining the efforts of scientists for solving the problems of aquatic bioresources and aquaculture. There are programs of internships of young scientists and trainings in new methods and techniques of research, selection, molecular-genetic and biochemical studies developed with research institutions of Poland, Hungary, USA, Russian Federation, and Belarus.

    In 1997, the institute was the initiator for creating the International Council of scientific and technical cooperation in the field of aquatic bioresources of inland water bodies, which included 16 scientific institutions of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russian Federation, Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine. The cooperation worked as bilateral and multilateral studies in the field of selection in aquaculture, conservation and restoration of valuable and endangered fish species, development of resource saving technologies of fish rearing, fisheries exploitation of reservoirs and cooling water bodies of energetic systems, fish feeding, prevention of fish diseases, etc.

    In 2004, the International Council was transformed into the Network of Aquaculture Centers in Central-Eastern Europe (NACEE), the main mandate of which was to coordinate research and development works in the field of aquatic bioresources and aquaculture in this region. The Institute of Fisheries is an associate contractor in following research topics: carp selection, sturgeon culture, conservation of aquatic bioresources, and others. Currently, the Institute of Fisheries participates in the project “Technological platform of aquaculture development in Central and Eastern Europe with the possibility of further integration into a common European scientific space”. The Institute is also a member of the European Aquaculture Association, with which it cooperates in different fields of fisheries science.

    Scientific library

    Library of the Institute of Fisheries NAAS is a specialized scientific-accessory subdivision, which carries out information-bibliographic and library support of institute’s scientific research. Library has a specialized stock of scientific literature on aquaculture, inland fisheries, ichthyology, hydroecology, hydrobiology, general biology, zoology, hydrotechnics, aquaculture economy. The thorough use of the library stock is facilitated by the reference-bibliographic tool composed of catalogues and file-cabinets. The card variant has alphabetical and systematic catalogues, which include Institute reports, periodic journals, dissertations and dissertation abstracts, articles of the Institute employees (partially). The electronic catalogue created on the IRBIS system base include monographs, collections of scientific articles, articles from periodicals and other publications. The scientific library stock is composed of about 50 000 items and contains all types of print publications. The library provides information and library-bibliographic services to scientists, specialists, postgraduate students, students of higher education institutions. Provision of services to readers is performed through subscription, in reading room and through an inter-library exchange system.

    Postgraduate and doctoral studies

    Scientific training at the Institute of Fisheries NAAS is performed through postgraduate school. Training o postgraduate students, according to the re-registration of the Institute's postgraduate school by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (protocol of 28.02.03 №112), is performed in following specialties:
