D. Infante Miguel, Duke of Viseu (born 3 December 1946) is a member of the Portuguese royal family, as the second child of Duarte Nuno, Duke of Braganza, and Princess Maria Francisca of Orléans-Braganza. The Duke of Viseu is fourth in the Line of succession to the former Portuguese throne, behind his elder brother, Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza, and his three children.

The Duke of Viseu is a noted patron of the arts and painter, and the founder and sponsor of the annual Luso-Brazilian Week of Aldravist Art, held interchangeably between Portugal and Brazil. He is also an active member in various orders of chivalry, notably the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George.

Early life

Miguel Gabriel Rafael Xavier Teresa Maria Felix was born on 3 December 1946, in Bern, Switzerland, to Duarte Nuno, Duke of Braganza, the pretender to the defunct throne of Portugal, and Maria Francisca of Orléans-Braganza. Since birth, Miguel has held the honorific styling of Dom and the styling of His Highness, alongside the titles of Infante of Portugal and Duke of Viseu.

In 1950, the Portuguese Laws of Banishment were repealed and Infante Miguel's family was permitted to return to Portugal, which they did in 1952.

Arts patronage

The Duke of Viseu founded, in 2011, the Annual Luso-Brazilian Week of Aldravist Art, held interchangingly between Portugal and Brazil. It celebrated its 5th session in 2016 in Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The Duke is also a painter himself and a fan of Dutch Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer and surrealist painter H. R. Giger.

The Duke of Viseu graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon.

Personal life

The Duke of Viseu is unmarried and without children. He primarily lives in Santar, Nelas Municipality, in the Viseu District, in the Casa das Fidalgas, a manor with origins in the 14th century.
