Stevens is regarded as one of the leading art directors in entertainment and music publishing. He became Creative Director of Empire in 2003, and joined Q five years later.

His Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith breathing Darth Vader cover for the June 2005 issue of Empire was voted as one of the top 10 magazine covers of the last 100 years by the Professional Publishers Association (PPA). Nine out of ten of the Empire's reader’s favourite covers are designed by Stevens (including the top three).

Stevens was also recognised for his art direction during his time at Q magazine, picking up the Bauer Media Group's cover of the year in 2008, winner the inaugural Maggies in 2009, and again 2010 in the Celebrity and Entertainment category.

He joined Top Gear in 2011 and was responsible for the magazine's current redesign; its most extensive since its launch in 1993. This was successfully rolled out into 32 international editions of the magazine and its digital counterparts.
