Hypenodes sombrus is a species of moth in the Erebidae family. It was described by Ferguson in 1954. It is found from Nova Scotia to western Alberta. The habitat consists of bogs, cattail marshes, dry pine and other woodlands.

The wingspan is 13–16 mm. The forewings are dark brown to dull black-brown. The hindwings are slightly paler sooty brown and darker toward the margin. Adults have been collected in July. There seems to be one generation per year.
