roasted brown rice, water

Hyeonmicha (현미차; "brown rice tea") is a Korean tea made by infusing roasted brown rice in boiling water.

To make hyeonmicha, wash brown Japonica rice, then roast it dry in a pot. Return water and bring to a boil, and simmer for approximately ten minutes. Finally, filter out the rice and serve. The beverage may range from pale yellow to light golden brown in color.

Hyeonmicha has traditionally been used for medicinal purposes, because of the benefits for blood circulation, motion sickness, and shortness of breath that some believe hyeonmi (brown rice) possesses.

Pre-roasted rice is available commercially in Korean grocery stores, both in Korea as well as overseas, in plastic packages.

Hyeonmicha can be mixed with green tea to produce hyeonminokcha (현미녹차; "brown rice green tea"). In Japan, a very similar tea is called genmaicha (玄米茶), which is a cognate of hyeonmicha. In Vietnam, a nearly identical drink is called nước gạo lức, nước gạo lức rang, or nước gạo rang.
