The Hong Kong Film Award for Best Director is an annual Hong Kong industry award presented to a director for the best achievement in cinematic direction.

History

The award was established at the 1st Hong Kong Film Awards (1982) and the first winner and the sole participant in this category was Allen Fong for his film Father and Son. From the 2nd Hong Kong Film Awards (1983), there are 5, sometimes 6, nominations for the category of Best Director from which one director is chosen the winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Director. The most recent recipient of the award was Ann Hui, who was honoured at the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards (2012), for her film A Simple Life.

The directors with most awards in this category is Ann Hui with 5 times, followed by Allen Fong and Johnnie To with 3 times each. Ann Hui and Mabel Cheung are the only women who won in this category.
