Hoàn Kiếm (Sino-Vietnamese for Returned Sword) is an urban district (quận) of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, named after the scenic Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Hoàn Kiếm District is the downtown and commercial center of Hanoi. Most of the largest Vietnamese public corporations and bank headquarters are located here, but the central government offices are located in Ba Đình District (sometimes called the French quarter). The Hanoi City Committee is located on Dinh Tien Hoang street, adjacent to the Hoan Kiem lake.

The district retain within itself a long history of the creation of Thang Long - Hanoi.

In the early of Ly Dynasty, in 545, the Emperor Ly Nam De has settled his encampment, built the wooden raft on To Lich river to defend against invasion of Liang Dynasty.

During Nguyen Dynasty, Emperor Mang Minh established Hanoi province here in 1831.

During period 1954-1961, this area consists of whole Hoan Kiem street, Dong Xuan street and a part of Hang Co street and Hang Bai street; In 1961, all of those combined into Hoan Kiem street; in 1/1981 the street changed its name into Hoan Kiem district, including 18 streets: Chuong Duong, Eastern Gate, Southern Gate, Dong Xuan, Hang Bac, Hang Bai, Hang Bo, Hang Bong, Hang Buom, Hang Dao, Hang Gai, Hang Ma, Hang Trong, Ly Thai To, Phan Chu Trinh, Phuc Tan, Tran Hung Dao, Trang Tien, and hasn't been changing until now.

Many of Hanoi's tourist attractions are located here, including: The Old Quarter, Hanoi Opera House, National Museum of Vietnamese History, and the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre.
