During the Reconstruction Era, newly emanicipated African American slaves began moving from rural areas into towns and cities to establish Freedmen's Towns (also known as freedmantowns). Several such communities existed in Austin, Texas including Clarksville, Wheatsville, Masontown and Kicheonville.
