The highland elaenia (Elaenia obscura) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers. It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, and heavily degraded former forest.

Subspecies

Twosubspecies are currently recognized. These subspecies exhibit deep genetic divergence and are likely candidates for future species splits:

  • E. o. sordidaZimmer, 1941: found in southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina
  • E. o. obscura(D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837): found in se Ecuador to Bolivia and northwestern Argentina
