When missing government lawyer Frank Canfield is accused of embezzling state funds, journalist Brad Bradshaw (Paul Muni) refuses to publish the headline because he considers it sensational and unverifiable. But when the media circus declares Canfield guilty, Brad is demoted for getting scooped by every paper in town. Now forced to write a ladies advice column, Brad struggles to save face, attract a readership and find out the truth about the Canfield case in hopes of regaining his old job.

Hi, Nellie! is a 1934 crime drama film starring Paul Muni and Glenda Farrell, directed by Mervyn LeRoy. A newspaper editor is demoted to writing an advice column for refusing to go along with the crowd in declaring a missing lawyer a thief.
Managing Editor Brad Bradshaw refuses to run a story linking the disappearance of Frank Canfield with embezzlement of the bank. He considers Frank a straight shooter and he goes easy on the story. Every other paper goes with the story that Frank took the money and Brad is demoted, by the publisher, to the Heartthrob column - writing advice to the lovelorn. After feeling sorry for himself for two months, he takes the column seriously and makes it the talk of the town. But Brad still wants his old job back so he will have to find Canfield and the missing money.
