Herbert Karl Hermann Bartels (15 August 1917 – 1 July 2009) was a highly decorated Hauptmann in the Luftwaffe during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Herbert Bartels was captured by American troops April 1945, he was released in August. In 1956 he joined the Bundeswehr, retiring in 1972.
