Henry Brown was an African-American inventor, perhaps best known as the inventor of a type of strongbox.
Henry Blair and Henry Brown invented Fire Safe and Strongbox. Both received patents.
Strongboxes had been around since at least 1835, when English inventors Charles Chubb and Jeremiah Chubb received a patent for a burglar-resisting safe. Henry Brown developed a type of lockable, forged-metal container, divided into compartments, and patented his invention (number 352,036) on November 2, 1886.
