History
Heizer had its beginnings in the 1880s with the building of the railroad through that territory. It was named for David N. Heizer, a former owner of the town site and mayor of nearby Great Bend, who saw the need for a railway stop northwest of Great Bend. Heizer was the first stop where trains could drop off and pick up mail and take on cream, cattle and grain.
Heizer, once a busy little town with over a 100 residents, had a train depot, a blacksmith shop, hotels, stockyards, a lumberyard, creamery, church, schools, 2 grain elevators, and a bank. The original remaining buildings include the church, school, which was erected in 1927, the general store, and the bank, established in 1911.
Heizer currently has approximately 20 residents.
