Harwood Island (British Columbia)

Harwood Island is the former name of Ahgykson, a small island that lies off the coast of Powell River, BC. The island is an Indian reserve and is part of the traditional territory of the Sliammon First Nation.

The island has long been called "Ahgykson" by the Tla'amin people who have lived in this territory for at least 8,000 years. In 1798, Captain Vancouver renamed it in his records as "Harwood Island." The traditional Tla'amin name was officially reinstated on 5 April 2016.

The island is a popular weekend destination during the summer season for tourists and residents of Powell River.

An excellent day paddle option near Powell River is to circumnavigate Ahgykson. This culturally significant island is viewed directly across from Powell River and provides a wonderful experience that includes interesting geology, beautiful sandy beaches and lively marine gardens. One can launch from either Powell River or from Gibsons Beach - about a 10-minute drive north of town. Harwood Island is currently uninhabited and is also a Sliammon First Nation reservation. Anyone wishing to visit the island should contact the Sliammon First Nation for permission.

Experienced paddlers may paddle the 19 km circumnavigation in a day. All paddlers should keep a close eye and ear to the weather as this destination has excellent exposure to the Strait of Georgia.
