The Hamgyong Mountains (Gangbaekjeonggan) is a mountainous range running northeastward for 350 km in the northeastern part of North Korea. They extend parallel to the coast of the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea), with the northeastern terminus at the Tumen River valley. This is the highest range of mountains on the peninsula. The tallest mountain in the range is Kwanmo Peak (2,540 m)—the second highest mountain in the country, followed by Du Peak (2,396 m), Gwesang Peak (2,333 m) and Mount Dury (2,303 m). In total, 72 of the mountains in this range are 2,000 m or higher.
