Haji Chalabi Khan (1703–1755), was an Azerbaijani statesman, warlord, khan (1747-1755), ruler and founder of Shaki Khanate.

Biography

He was a distant offspring of Hasan Sultan a grandson of Mustafa Celebi.Nader Shah who wanted to subdue the people of Shaki, attacked it in 1744 and sieged the Gelersen-Gorersen fortress where Haji Chalabi took refuge. The name of the fortress Gələrsən Gorərsən which means in Azerbaijani language "Come and see" derives from the historic episode related to the siege. When Nader Shah sent an ultimatum to surrender, Haji Chelebi sent a response letter saying "Come and see". Outraged shah ordered to destroy the rest of the town. After the death of Nader Shah, Haji Chelebi took revenge by going south as far as Tabriz. Haji Chalabi Khan died from illness in 1755. According to other sources, he died as a result of assassination plot organized by other Azerbaijani khans. He had three sons: Aghakishi Khan, Haji Abdulgadir and Jafar Agha. Aghakishi Khan succeeded his father as the ruler of Shaki Khanate.
