Greater Niš Area is the area consisting of the center, urban settlements, rural settlements of Niš and other smaller towns located near the city. The area consist of six municipalities and one special municipality that is divided into five city municipalities. The largest municipality by population is Medijana at 88,010 residents, while the largest by area is Aleksinac at 707 square kilometers

History

The current Greater Niš Area was formed in 2002 when the borders of all municipalities were marked. Before that, it consisted of much more municipalities because it was part of a Nišava District that included the modern Nišava District, Pirot District and Zaječar District. It had a population of about 700,000 people before the districts were split.
