Gram Vikas Residential School was established in 1982 at kankia village in Ganjam district. With only one government residential school in the area, admitting only 30 students a year, there were very low possibilities for further studies for class III students who completed studies in Gram Vikas operation village schools. In its first academic year(2002–2003), 46 children from 26 of Gram Vikas operational villages were enrolled in the school.
At Gram Vikas Residential School, students are provided quality education with good health care facilities, potable water, nutritious food, and a clean environment. Schools continuous efforts to create a child centric environment help in physical and mental development of the kids. In this school lot of emphasis is given to sports. They had collaborated with 'Pro sports Development' organization to bring about holistic development of kids in physical education. They gave professional training to children in various sports like Weight lifting, Volleyball, Badminton & kho-kho, track & field events. In Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan- 2014, students won 14 gold medals and 2 silver medals in various sports at district level.In weigh lifting competition 9 out of 15 participants won gold medal.
