History

Government College of Technology, Coimbatore was founded in 1945 as Arthur Hope College of Technology named after Arthur Hope, Governor of Madras Presidency (1940–46) by G. D. Naidu. The College was modelled after the then famous Germany’s technical instutions with inputs by Stoll family and Hermann Weiler. Till 1950 the college functioned in Peelamedu, then a suburb of Coimbatore.

In June 1950, the college moved to its current location in Thadagam Road, Coimbatore.In 1951, the college was renamed as Government College of Technology (GCT). The college was initially affiliated to the University of Madras, later to the Bharathiar University and since the academic year 2001-2002 to Anna University. In 1981, the college was granted autonomy for its civil and mechanical engineering postgraduate programs. Subsequently, in 1987, full autonomy for all programs was granted.

Academics

The institute offers undergraduate courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering and postgraduate courses award the Master of Engineering degree. Undergraduate students are admitted based on competitive student rankings in higher secondary examination.

Clubs

The various forums and clubs include Biotech Forum, Civil Engineering Association, Computer Science and Engineering Association (CSA), Information Technology Association (ITA), Electrical, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering Association (EEEIEA), Electronics and Communication Engineering Association (ECEA), Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA), Production Engineering Association (PEA), Student Branch of IEEE, ISTE chapter, Green club, Science club, Fine arts club, Orchestra, Rotaract Club, Literary and Debating Society, Tamil Mandram, Student Journalist Council. The first edition of Aperture, the student e-Newsletter of GCT was launched on 21 February 2014.

Hostels

There are nine hostel blocks of which two are reserved for women and can accommodate a total of 1500 students. The hostels are named after rivers namely Palar, Ponnai, Kaveri, Bhavani, Vaigai, Thamirabharani, Vellaru, Amaravathi and Kothai.

Symposiums

Most of the departments conduct individual technical symposiums during December to May which include Elyzia (biotechnology), Geofest (civil), InfoQuest (computer science), Nexus (electronics and communication), Oracle (electrical, electronics, and instrumentation), TechnovatE (Information & Technology) Praxis (production), Technotryst (mechanical). Sangamam is the official cultural festival of GCT.

Reaching GCT

One can reach GCT campus by boarding intercity buses. Bus route numbers 70 and 64D can be taken from Gandhipuram town bus stand, Coimbatore.
