The Government Boarding School at Lac du Flambeau is located in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
History
The school was originally built by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Its intention was to try and strip local Ojibwe children of their culture. Children from the tribes ages five to fifteen were required to attend. Once there, they were forced to abandon the usage of all Native American traditions.
The school was later owned by the Ojibwe people. In 2000, the Bureau of Indian Affairs formally apologized for the school's history.
