Profiles

Golos (Russian: Голос; English: The Voice) is a Russian reality television singing competition broadcast on Channel One. Based on the original The Voice of Holland, the concept of the series is to find currently unsigned singing talent (solo or duets, professional and amateur) contested by aspiring singers, age 17 or over, drawn from public auditions. The winner is determined by television viewers voting by telephone, SMS text, and The Voice App.

Contents

The winners of the five seasons have been: Dina Garipova, Sergei Volchkov, Alexandra Vorobyova, Hieromonk Fotiy, and Darya Antonyuk.

The series employs a panel of four coaches who critique the artists' performances and guide their teams of selected artists through the remainder of the season. They also compete to ensure that their act wins the competition, thus making them the winning coach. Members of the coaching panel include Dima Bilan (season 1—3, 5), Pelageya (season 1—3), Alexander Gradsky (season 1—4), Leonid Agutin (season 1—3, 5), Basta (season 4), Polina Gagarina (season 4—5) and Grigory Leps (season 4—5).

Golos began airing on October 5, 2012, as a autumn-winter TV season program. The show proved to be a hit for Channel One. The series premiered its fifth season on September 2, 2016.

Format

The format for Golos differs from a traditional talent show. Many of the contestants are professional vocalists and represents a broad range of musical genres and vocal capabilities. A key difference compared to other televised vocal competition shows is the high demand on the vocal coaches and the significant respect afforded to each participant. The coaches do not simply offer each contestant a critique or suggest that the contestant change his or her approach to singing and performing, but rather work with each contestant on equal terms, providing in-depth analysis and detailed recommendations in an effort to help each contestant create the best possible all-around performance.

The winner of the first season of the final, which took place on December 29, 2012 was Dina Garipova, a member of Aleksander Gradsky's team. She was subsequently selected as the Russian representative to the Eurovision Song Contest 2013.

Rules

"Golos" consists of three phases: a blind audition, a battle phase, and live performance shows. Four judges/coaches, all noteworthy recording artists, choose teams of contestants through a blind audition process. Each judge has the length of the auditioner's performance (about one minute) to decide if he or she wants that singer on his or her team; if two or more judges want the same singer (as happens frequently), the singer has the final choice of coach.
