Plot

The Doctor's friends rally to rescue him from the clutches of Fenric. Each of them face their darkest nightmares, and at least one of them will not live to tell the tale.

Cast

  • Seventh Doctor - Sylvester McCoy
  • Ace - Sophie Aldred
  • Hex - Philip Olivier
  • Captain Aristedes - Maggie O'Neill
  • Private Sally Morgan - Amy Pemberton
  • Fenric - John Standing
  • Hurmzid - Blake Ritson
  • Weyland - Gus Brown
  • The Ancient One - Tim Treloar
  • Peggy Marsden - Elizabeth Bennett
  • Continuity

  • Ace and Hex discovered that the Doctor was missing at the start of Protect and Survive.
  • Fenric and the Haemovores first appeared in the 1989 Seventh Doctor television story, The Curse of Fenric.
  • In her first television story, 1987's Dragonfire, Ace explained that she first left Earth in the 1980s, during a botched chemistry experiment. In The Curse of Fenric, Fenric revealed that he had transported her in a Time Storm.
  • The Doctor is reminded of his description of Ace's home, spoken during Dragonfire, "It's an idyllic place, Perivale. Lush green meadows, village blacksmith."
  • Fenric claimed he had a backup companion in mind for the Doctor, a Welsh girl on a motorcycle. This is a reference to Ray, in the 1987 television story, Delta and the Bannermen. This is an obscure joke, as that character was, at one point, being considered as a new companion, before it was decided to introduce Ace.
  • The Doctor claims he had first suspected Fenric's return in the 2009 audio story, The Magic Mousetrap.
  • The Truth Sayer was explained in Project: Nirvana.
  • Peggy and Albert were introduced in Protect and Survive.
  • Weyland claims to have directly influenced the creation of The Forge, and manipulated the lives of all of its personnel.
  • Hex was shot in The Angel of Scutari. He was returned to health in the next story, Project: Destiny, seemingly at the hands of The Forge.
