Gnomes (first published in Dutch in 1976 as Leven en werken van de kabouter; English, 1977), one in a series of books, was written by Wil Huygen and illustrated by Rien Poortvliet. The book explains the life and habitat of gnomes in an in-universe fashion, much as a biology book would do, complete with illustrations and textbook notes.

The 1980 film Gnomes, and the series David the Gnome and Wisdom of the Gnomes are based on this book.

The book was followed by:

  • Secrets of the Gnomes (De oproep der Kabouters) by Huygen and Poortvliet (Van Holkema & Warendorf, 1981)
  • The Complete Gnomes (De Kabouter), a compilation of the first two books, by Huygen and Poortvliet (1981)
  • Gnome Life by Huygen
  • A Gnome's Christmas by Poortvliet
