The Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) at Stanford University "seeks new solutions to one of the grand challenges of this century: supplying energy to meet the changing needs of a growing world population in a way that protects the environment."[1]

Beginning in December 2002, GCEP is a 10-year, $225m research project aimed at developing new energy technologies. It has the support of four major companies - ExxonMobil, General Electric, Schlumberger, and Toyota. Under the heading "Grand Challenge" it identifies a global warming-related need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through future energy development.
