Ghost teachers are educators who fail to show up for work, have moved away, or otherwise maintain sinecure employment in the field. This issue is especially large in Sindh province, Pakistan. Up to 40,000 teachers are on the payroll there, but do not teach, causing the closure of greater than 5,700 schools.

Many ghost teachers have left Pakistan for Saudi Arabia and Dubai, but continue to draw a monthly salary. This has led the provincial government to take action against them and bureaucrats who allegedly turned a blind eye to the practice.
