George Lewis Turin was born in New York City on January 27, 1930. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and earned 3 degrees: S.B. in 1951, S.M. in 1952 and Sc.D. in 1956. Turin retired from UC Berkeley in 1990, and died in March 2014.

From 1983 to 1986, Turin was the Dean of UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Turin was an IEEE Fellow, a Fellow of the British Science and Engineering Research Council, and was a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Turin's doctoral adviser was Wilbur Davenport.

Turin's Ph.D student was Jeremiah F. Hayes.
