Dr. George Edmund Haynes (1881-1959/1960) was a co-founder and first executive director of the National Urban League.[1]
Born and raised in Arkansas, Haynes migrated from Pine Bluff, Arkansas to New York City, where he would live most of his life. He received a sociology PhD from Columbia University, thus making him the first African-American to earn a PhD from Columbia. From 1918 to 1921, Haynes served as director of the Division of Negro Economics in the United States Department of Labor, thus becoming the first African-American to serve in a federal sub-cabinet post.[2]
