Young was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida in 1938 and his LL.B from the University of Florida College of Law in 1940. Young was in private practice in Winter Haven, Florida from 1941 to 1942 and was a U.S. Navy lieutenant from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. Young was in private practice in Miami from 1947 to 1948. He was administrative assistant to U.S. Representative and later U.S. Senator George Smathers from 1948 to 1951. Young was reassigned to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida on October 29, 1962.
