Genetic Testing Laboratories (GTL) is a DNA testing company that specializes in DNA paternity testing, relationship and ancestry tests. Headquartered in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the company also has offices in Brighton, England and Brisbane, Australia.

History

GTL is part of General Genetics Corporation General Genetics which acquired Genetic Testing Laboratories, Inc., Forensic Testing Laboratories, Inc. and Clinical Testing Laboratories, Inc. in 2013. The laboratories were established in 2001 at the Arrowhead Research Center on the campus of New Mexico State University. The company grew by 1,200% over the next four years and grew their staff base from three employees to forty.

Through this public-private partnership between private investors and the University, the company has become a major contributor in the genetic testing field garnering high levels of certification and accreditation, including AABB, A2LA, CLIA, NATA and the British Ministry of Justice.

In 2013, the company’s genetic predisposition test was called into question by a New York Times reporter who claimed that her results differed between similar tests from 23 and Me and Pathway genomics. One of these differences included the risk assessment of contracting Type 2 Diabetes, of which the reporter’s results were a ‘decreased risk’ of 15.7% while Genetic Testing laboratories’ results showed a ‘medium risk’ at 15.7%.

Although the company does not currently offer genetic predisposition testing direct to consumers, it was one of the few companies to offer consultations with genetic counselors.
