General Electric Global Research Centers have created a new format of disc, dubbed the holographic disc. It has the same physical dimensions as CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray Discs, yet can hold many times the data – up to 500 GB. General Electric has been working on their HVD for six years, and it is planned to be released into the commercial market sometime in the next four years. As the technology is quite similar to CD, DVD, and Blu-ray technologies, the players are also similar – GE states a HVD player will also be able to play the other formats of discs.
