Gender equality in Rwanda is rated as being sixth-best in the world. After the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has promoted gender equality. The progress of promoting gender equality in Rwanda is driven by a strong commitment from the central government. Rwanda was the first country in the world to have women occupy over half of the seats in its national legislature. Though the number of females in the Parliament is large, women are still under-represented in other political institutions.
The government has promoted gender equality in Rwanda using the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion. In one significant change, women have been given the same right as men to inherit land.
