Garth Steek is a politician, lawyer, and businessman in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was elected to the Winnipeg City Council in 1995 and served on that body until 2004.

Background

Steek has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Winnipeg and a law degree from the University of Manitoba. He left the legal practice to join his family's business, Steekā€™s Fine Furniture, in Winnipeg.

In 1995 Steek was elected to Winnipeg City Council, beating incumbent Sandy Hyman, in the River Heights Ward. Steek was re-elected in 1998 and 2002. In 2002, Steek announced he would not seek re-election as a Councillor and would instead run for Mayor of Winnipeg against Mayor Glen Murray. He later withdrew from the race for Mayor, claiming he could not beat Murray. He then ran for re-election in River Heights, winning by acclamation.

When Murray resigned as Mayor in mid-term in 2004, Steek ran in the municipal by-election to replace him. He placed a distant fifth, losing to Sam Katz. Near the end of the race, some of his supporters indicated that he had given up and was quietly assisting Katz's campaign.
