On 14 June 1940, Cassard took part in a sortie by the French 3rd Squadron against Italian ports. The 1st Cruiser Division consisting of the cruisers Algérie and Foch, together with the destroyers Cassard, Lion, Vauban, Aigle, Tartu and Le Chevalier Paul, shelled Vado Ligure, while the 2nd Cruiser Division (Colbert, Dupleix plus escorting destroyers) attacked Genoa.
