It is 5 nautical miles (9 km) long and terminates in the north at Mount Gale. It was named by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) for Sergeant R. This geographical feature lies situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.
