The Fort Wayne Safari was officially announced in 2000 as an expansion team in the Indoor Professional Football League (IPFL) and based out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were to join the league in 2002, and to play their home games at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Official team colors were going to be black, khaki tan, hunter green, and orange. The owners of the Safari were Jay Leonard (President) and Tony Richards (Vice-President).

The Safari never did get the chance to play a single game in the IPFL since they were to begin play following a renovation of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The IPFL folded before the renovations at the Coliseum were finished.

Fort Wayne would eventually see indoor football played in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum by 2003 as the Fort Wayne Freedom took the field in the National Indoor Football League.
