Fore Street

"Fore Street" is a name often used for the main street of a town or village. Usage is almost entirely confined to the south west of England but it does also occur in some other parts of the country. There is also a Fore Street in Portland, Maine, United States, presumably named by colonists from SW England. The prevalence of streets named "Fore Street" in Cornwall is due to a survival from the Cornish language -"Forth" = "Street". There are over seventy "Fore Streets" in Cornwall and about seventy five in Devon.

The name is to equivalent to the "High Street" of most of England, the "Front Street" of County Durham and the "Main Street" of Ireland and the USA.
