Flossie M Byrd (born 1927) was an economist, and the first African American woman to be elected president of one of Texas's "first class" public institutions of higher education, Prairie View A&M University. She has won several awards and titles for her distinguished work, including the Distinguished Service Award from the American Home Economics Association (1990), and the titles of president of the National Council of Administrators of Home Economics (1971–1972), president of the Association of Administrators of Home Economics (1981–83), and Vice President of the American Home Economics Association (1985–1987).
