One approach of modern combustion theory describes a premixed flame as a thin interface separating reactants and products. The surface of the interface that faces reactants is often termed as the flame front. Similarly, the surface that faces the products can be termed as the flame back.

Analysis of flow field and thermo-chemical structure at the flame front can provide information about the burning efficiency of a premixed flame.
