Film Collection is an annual screening event in New York City and around the world; a showcase for new independent films by emerging filmmakers; and a significant initiative to raise awareness and funds for non-profit organizations.
Founded by filmmaker Topaz Adizes in March 2006, the events take place at the IFC Center. According to Adizes, "our mission is to build a worldwide audience that empowers themselves to impact their communities. We believe that by telling stories, we are creating greater understanding of the world we live in and reminding ourselves of our shared humanity."
The first Film Collection raised funds and awareness for the Daniel Pearl Foundation, .[1] [2], created in memory of journalist Daniel Pearl to further the ideals that inspired Daniel's life and work. The foundation's mission is to promote cross-cultural understanding through journalism, music, and innovative communications. The event was preceded by a talk by Daniel's widow, Mariane. The 2007 Film Collection raised money for Seeds of Peace, whose stated aim is "to empower young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence". Film Collection is slated to hold future screenings in Amman, Jordan and Havana, Cuba.
The films showcased at Film Collection have gone on to win numerous awards at domestic and international film festivals. Unsettled, a film by Adam Hootnick about the Israeli withdrawals from the Gaza Strip, earned best documentary at the Slamdance film festival. [4] Autumn's Eyes, directed by Gabriel Noble and Paola Mendoza, about a New York three-year-old separated from her incarcerated mother, won best editing at the Woodstock Film Festival. [5] [6]
