History

Carnival announced Fathom's establishment on June 4, 2015. Beginning in April 2016, Fathom will operate what Carnival calls “social impact travel” journeys lasting seven days from PortMiami, Florida, to the Dominican Republic. The journeys will include volunteer activities with established organizations on the ground. Carnival reassigned the MV Adonia to Fathom as its first ship.

On 2 May 2016, Adonia docked in the port of Havana, the first port of her Cuban itinerary for Fathom. It marked the first time in over 50 years that a U.S. cruise line has sailed from the U.S. to Cuba. It is also the first time in decades that Cuban-born individuals have been able to travel by sea to or from Cuba.

In November 2016, it was announced that Fathom would discontinue operations in June 2017. The Fathom ship, the MV Adonia, will return to Carnival’s P&O Cruises at that time. Carnival Corporation has said that the Fathom name will continue as a branded experience that will be offered on six other Carnival Corp. cruise lines, AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and P&O Cruises.

Management

Fathom's president is Tara Russell, an entrepreneur who founded Create Common Good, a nonprofit enterprise that provides food service job training to help at-risk people become self-sufficient. Russell is the global impact lead for Carnival, working with its 10 cruise line brands on social impact strategies. In that role, she reports directly to Arnold Donald.

Fleet

The first ship in Fathom's fleet will be the R-class cruise ship, which had been operating for Carnival's P&O Cruises as the MV Adonia.

While in service with Fathom, the ship will still be supported by P&O Cruises, which will also provide hotel and food and beverage services. Other Carnival companies will provide additional support.
