Exogamous group is a section of society within which marriages are prohibited. A marriage within an exogamous group is regarded as incestuous.

Examples of exogamous groups are:

  • Gotras and Clans in the castes in India.
  • "Fis" among the Albanians
  • The Oroqen people, one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China
  • Individuals with the same last name in China, or Chinese surname, Chinese clan
