Political career

Sparks ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1921 Alberta general election. He ran as a United Farmers candidate in a two-way race against Liberal incumbent Hugh John Montgomery in the Wetaskiwin provincial electoral district. Sparks won the straight fight by a comfortable margin to pick up the district for his party.

Sparks ran for a second term in the 1926 Alberta general election. He faced a three-way race, but his primary opponent was Montgomery. The race was hotly contested with Sparks winning it in the second count.

Sparks ran for a third term in office in the 1930 Alberta general election. He was defeated by Montgomery who won a comfortable majority to reclaim his seat in the two-way race.
