The Evenk Hydroelectric Power Plant, formerly the HPP Turukhansk, is a proposed power station on the Lower Tunguska River in the Krasnoyarsk Territory of Russia. The projected dam will be the largest hydroelectric power station in Russia, with a capacity of 12,000 MW. It will also be one of the largest in the world after the Chinese Three Gorges Dam, at 22,500 MW, and the South American Itaipu Dam, at 14,000 MW. The Evenk plant will be able to be up-sized to 20,000 MW.

Overview of the project

The power plant will consist of a set of 12 to 20 radial-axial hydraulic turbine units with a capacity of 1,000 MW each, operating at maximum head of 184 m. The dam will create Evenk (Turukhansky) reservoir, with an area of 9,400 sq km, complete and useful volume of 409.4 and 101.0 cu km respectively, and a length of about 1200 km. Planned for below the Evenk Hydropower Plant is a second plant (Evenk II), of 790 MW, the main task of which will be to equalize the uneven discharge of water from the main hydroelectric power station.

Electricity should be transferred to the Tyumen region and later to European Russia over two transmission lines at an AC voltage of 1500 kV and a length of 3,500 km, the power and length of the lines being unprecedented in Russia. Also, the power transmission lines will enable the integration of the isolated Norilsk area with the united power grid. With a huge supply of water, Evenk HPP will be able to compensate for even a significant leap of energy consumption and reduce dependence on thermal power, including on coal-operated stations. The total cost of construction (including transmission lines) is estimated at $11.9 billion.
