Empis tessellata is a large species of dance fly, in the fly family Empididae. In the United Kingdom, Adults can be seen from April to August, particularly on the flowers of umbellifers. At about 8.5–12 millimetres (0.3–0.5 in), it is the largest British Empis species, though there are other similar sized species in mainland Europe.
