The Emma books are a series for children by Sally Warner. The main character and narrator is Emma McGraw, a new kid who moved in to California from Magdelana school. She has curly brown hair and wants to be a zoologist when she grows up. She is currently in third grade. She wishes that she would have normal, straight hair and not be divorced.

Contents

Annie Pat Materson

Emma McGraw's best friend, and second main character of the series, is Annie Pat, a girl with bouncy curly red hair. Annie Pat shares Emma's interest in science; being a marine scientist is Annie Pat's ideal job. She has a baby brother who also has curly red hair; Emma says it runs in the family. She does not like to be brave or to get into fights. Cynthia has once called her Bozo, teasing her red hair, about a clown named Bozo who also had, similar hair to Annie Pat's.

Cynthia Harbison

A girl named Cynthia was at first Emma's friend. However, Cynthia stopped befriending Emma, causing Emma to think Cynthia has betrayed her. She is popular and according to Emma, knows everything that is happening. She calls it her 'secret sources'. She has straight, short blond hair which she always puts on a hairband. At lunch, Cynthia always says her best friends in order ("Today, Fiona is my first best friend, and Heather is my second best friend"). Emma also remarks that she is relieved that she is not listing her enemies in order, because she puts Emma first, and then after than Annie Pat. Emma and Annie Pat called her Bossy Pants, when they both got mad at the fact that Cynthia made up new teasing names for them. Know it all.

Heather And Fiona

They are both fans of Cynthia. Heather always raises her hand in class, going, “Oh! Oh!” To attract their teacher, Ms. Sanchez's, attention. They always agree to anything Cynthia says, and always offer her their lunch. Heather and Fiona always try to sit next to her at lunch and recess. Emma thinks they are kiss ups.

Ms. Sanchez

The class's teacher. She has an engagement ring that the girls love to talk about, though they know hardly anything about it. Emma thinks she is the most beautiful teacher in her new school. She is engaged to Mr. Timberlake, but as Emma says, he's not the one on MTV. Fiona has a journal that says what Ms. Sanchez wears every day and she comments the fashionable teacher in the notebook and gives Ms. Sanchez five star ratings.

Jared Matthews

Jared (or how Emma and Annie Pat call him - Jar-Head), a big bully who was mean to Emma in a few books. He mostly bullies kids who are in first grade.

EllRay Jakes

(Actually Lancelot Raymond Jakes) is a boy who is very tiny and stands up to Jared as much as he can. Emma once said, "I think he's cool, but that's a secret." It is therefore hinted that she might have a crush on EllRay.

Stanley Washington

An annoying boy who is always giving everybody names. He is only mentioned in Super Emma. He is friends with Jared and he had made up the name Super Emma, and went on Jared side in the fight.

Corey

He sits next to Emma and he is very shy. Corey has floppy green hair because of the chlorine in the pool he swims in every morning. He plans to be in the Olympics.
