Electromethanogenesis is a form of electrofuel production where methane is produced by direct biological conversion from electrical current and carbon dioxide. The reduction process is carried out in a microbial electrolysis cell. A 2009 article by Cheng and Logan reports that a current capture efficiency of 96% can be achieved using a 1.0 V current.
