Edison High School is a private high school in Portland, Oregon, United States. The school specifically serves students with complex learning differences, meeting the special education needs of learning disabled (LD) teens. Students’ learning differences may include ADD, ADHD, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyslexia, Tourette’s syndrome, visual perception and/or nonverbal learning disorders; it does not serve students whose primary disability is not of an academic nature.
Edison was founded in 1973 as the Tree of Learning, holding classes in portable buildings on the campus of Jesuit High School. In 1992, it moved into its own building on the campus of Jesuit High School, and changed its name to Thomas A. Edison High School. The school is named for the famed inventor, Thomas A. Edison, a dyslexic who struggled in school and, despite his learning differences, went on to great success.
In 2014, the name was streamlined to Edison High School. Edison has been accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission/AdvancED since 1990 and meets the State of Oregon requirements for private alternative schools. The majority of graduating Edison HS students go on to 2- or 4-year colleges and vocational/trade schools.
The school has a relationship with Jesuit High School; some Edison students attend classes at Jesuit High School and some Jesuit High School students take classes at Edison. Edison and Jesuit students may also participate in each other's co-curricular programs, athletics, retreats, Masses and social events, such as dances.
The school has a Director, Patrick J. Maguire, and a Board of Directors that consists of 15 members. Edison's teaching staff has 17 credentialed faculty members, including three counselors and a transition specialist. Enrollment is capped at 90 students, and class size averages nine. Edison High School is a charitable corporation under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.
The school's official tagline is: "Your potential. Illuminated."
