Stefanski grew up in the Delaware Valley, attending St. Bernadette's Grade school in Drexel Hill as the star player on both the football and basketball teams. He then attended Monsignor Bonner High School in Upper Darby where he was a "Wall-of Fame" basketball standout at Bonner and then went on to play college basketball, as 'the shot', at the University of Pennsylvania. He replaced former Sixer GM Billy King. Stefanski was a 10th round selection of the 76ers in the 1976 NBA Draft.
