"Downfall" was released in 2004 as the fourth single from Matchbox Twenty's 2002 album, More Than You Think You Are. The song was a change compared to other songs from the album, featuring a gospel choir. The song was written by producer Matt Serletic and lead singer Rob Thomas.
The song was a modest hit on the U.S. Billboard Adult Top 40, peaking at #27 in summer 2004.
