Douglas High School is located in Douglas, Massachusetts, a small, rural town with a population of 8,535, representing a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. It contains a 5,907 acre state forest, farm lands, and some small businesses. Most of the townspeople commute to professional, business, or technical jobs in the Boston, Worcester, and Northern RI areas.
Academics
Douglas High School's academic offerings afford students the opportunity to select courses from AP, Honors, College Preparatory, and electives. A required summer reading program is in effect for grades 9 –12 enrolled in Honors English. Each school day consists of six class periods on a 7-day rotation, 1 block drops and 1 block is extended each day.
Course Levels
Douglas High School offers three course levels (College Prep, Honors, AP). College Prep, also known as level one, is the lowest course level offered. College Prep courses are designed to work at a slower pace to help students better understand material in the curriculum. Honors, also known as level two, is the middle course level offered at Douglas High School. Honors courses will be run at a faster pace than College Prep courses, and work can tend to be more vigorous in Honors courses compared to College Prep courses. Students and parents have the ability to choose the courses their student will be enrolled in for the next academic year at the end of the previous academic year.
AP Courses
The highest course level offered at Douglas High School is AP (Advanced Placement) courses. These courses involve a large amount of academic rigor and work even faster than honors courses. Douglas High School offers some AP courses including: English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, US Government, US History, Microeconomics, Spanish Language, Physics B, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, French, and VHS (Virtual High School) Classes.
AP Scholars
In 2015, Douglas High School had 27 total Scholars. Most notably two years ago two Douglas High School students received National AP Scholars status for the first time in the school’s history with an average of 4 or higher on 8 exams. Twelve Scholars scored a 3, 4, or 5 on 3 or more AP exams, five Scholars with Honor scored a 3, 4, or 5 on 4 AP exams with a 3.25 average score and ten Scholars with Distinction scored a 3, 4, or 5 on 5 or more AP exams with a 3.5 average score. This was the second time in four years Douglas High School was selected as a CollegeBoard AP Honor Roll School for expanding opportunity and improving performance for AP Students and providing a challenging, high quality education for students.
Graduation Requirements
Douglas High School requires a total of 124.5 credits in order to graduate. Students receive credits by passing courses. To pass a course, students must finish the academic year in the course with an overall grade of 65 or above. If a course is failed, students have many opportunities to regain lost credits, including retaking a course or summer school. Note: 2 years of foreign language is recommended but not required for graduation.
Senior Project
Douglas High School requires all seniors to complete a senior project as a graduation requirement. Students are required to choose an area of interest, and work with a mentor in their chosen field and share their experiences in a formal presentation to members of the community.
Class Rank
Class rank is a cumulative computation of a student’s academic standings in his/her class. It is a weighted ranking system where both the levels and course grades are used to determine grade point average and class standing. Junior class rank is based on six semesters. Senior class rank is based on eight semesters.
After Graduation
Recent graduates of Douglas High School are currently attending colleges and universities such as Brown University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Boston University, Vassar College, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and many others. Of the 2015 graduating class, 65% continued education at a four-year college, 25% continued education at a two-year college or technical school, and 10% chose to work, go to the military, etc.
